the fox news. >> thank you so much for starting your day with us. we do begin with a massive winter storm that is p pounding the northeast right now. it is the same storm system that has claimed at least 12 lives down south and knocked out power to half a million people. the snow and ice making roads in raleigh, north carolina, treacherous. one fire catching fire. >> nearly 4500 flights are canceled. that number is sure to go up. we have live coverage from the south to the north. maria, what can we expect today? >> today is going to be a very tough day. travel not recommended for so many people along parts of the east coast as the storm system continues to make its way northward. i want to mention some snow totals we have already seen.

in lancaster south carolina they have seen 8 inches of snow at least already. 9 inches of snow in virginia and as far as the ice accumulation it has been very significant across parts of the southeast. aiken, south carolina picking up three quarters of an inch of ice. that is why we have so many power outages in the northeast. the storm system is moving north. in dc we have seen heavy snowfall rates. we are expecting 1-2 inches an hour from dc and also northern parts of virginia all of the way up to the new york city area. it will be a very tough go early this morning out here. we are expecting the snow inches to accumulate. otherwise ice storm warnings in effect nor georgia and north carolina because we have potential to see the ice accumulating and you can see

widespread winter storm warnings from north carolina into parts of new england. how much additional snowfall will we see? not much through the northeast. in the carol lane gnduring duri carolinas 6 -- 6-12 inches in the corridor of boston. >> we will check back with you for sure. hundreds of thousands of people waking up without power in the south. jonathan continues our live coverage in atlanta. jonathan, were they more prepared this time around? >> yeah, it seems that way. they are asking them to stay off the roads for one more day. that should help the gridlock we saw two weeks ago.

in the raleigh durham area it was eerily reminiscent. conditions began to deteriorate and many got stuck in traffic. it has been weighing down the tree limps. heavy gusts have been causing branchs to fall on power lines. 208,000 homes are currently without electricity in georgia. the dot has been clearing roadways. a tree fell on a house injuring an 85-year-old woman inside. >> covered with insulation and sheetrock from the ceiling where the tree fell down through the roof. >> the woman was take tone the hospital but is expected to be okay. >> jonathan surrey, thank you. thousands of lights are already canceled. doug luzader picked up that

coverage at reagan international airport. good morning, doug. >> good morning. this is the time of day most airports get cranking. look around this place is just about empty. one group of stranded travelers, we will tell you about them in a moment. they are urging people to stay home and call the airlines first and verify the flight is getting out before they head out to any of the airports. this obviously is not just impacting airports in the region but really around the country because of that ripple effect. you have equipment stranded right along passengers and for those passengers all they can do is wrap things out. >> a lot of people may be waiting until friday if not beyond if they try to play catchup. we mentioned travelers down

new enrollment numbers 3.3 million signing up since february 1st. they are calling the new numbers encouraging. no number on how many paid. the goal of 7 million by march is still elusive. >> look who is talking syndicated columnist charles krauthammer says the administration is spinning the numbers and it is not going to end well. >> up to now the administration has been fudging the numbers, inflating them. they say they are enrolled, that means paid up. they have to admit in the fine print it means selected a plan, ie have a plan in your shopping cart but you haven't checked out yet. second, we don't know what the spread is. that is ruinous. that means health insurers are going to loose a fortune on the

to buy time warner cable needs the okay. comcast has 22 million subscribers and time warner has 11 million customers. after the deal closes comcast would have 33 percent of the u.s. paid tv market. the deal will be priced at $59 a share which is 18 percent more than time warner cable's wednesday close at $105. the vehicle depend ability is out and luxury leads the way. heather you are a car crazy gal. you are going to love this. cadillac in third place, mercedes benz in second place and lexus owned by toyota in first place. toyota finished in 8th on the survey. the least dependable brands are mini, dodge and land rover. the place where america shops now sears is the place america shops d goedz through the

hard. michael how are conditions down there? i am sure lots of snow days as well. >> oh, lots and lots of snow days. the good news is the snow has topped now we are dealing with freezing rain and also heavy winds. yesterday in win stom, salem, we received about five inches of snow. it is really thick here. but the concern with the freezing rain now turns to the ice. the police department urging drivers to stay off of the roads. the primary roads have been worked by crews salted but now they are freezing over. not only do we have 5 inches and higher amounts of snow in places but we are dealing with ice on the roads and potential for power outages on the drive up from winston salem. we saw at least a dozen cars pulled off to the side of the road. really unable to move. win sten salem police say as far as the secondary roads neighborhood roads they are impassable. crews have their work out cut out for them. >> bundle up and stay inside.

now. >> it is the same storm system that claimed at least 12 lives in the south. it knocked out power to more than half a million people. >> the snow and the ice making the roads extremely treacherous. an ambulance rushing to the hospital with a patient on board who got stuck on the ice. neighbors had to clear a path with their shoes and with dust pans. >> and fliers all across the country stranded as more than 4500 flights are canceled. that number surely will rise. we have live team coverage for you from the south to the north. >> so let's begin with maria molina live outside of our manhattan studio. what can we all expect today? >> we are expecting more snow, more freezing rain and more sleet all along parts of the east coast. here in new york city we are really seeing the snow picking up and we are expecting snowfall rates to be as high as 1 to 2 inches ter hour. there's something else i want to point out along parts of the east coast. it is a very heavy type of snow.

for people who have to shovel, you really need to be safe out there, keep this in mind try not to do too much work if you feel tired head back indoors. very heavy. very slushy type of snow due to the temperatures we have so close to the freezing mark. relatively warm for snow. otherwise the snow totals i want to show you some of these they are incredible. in lancaster, south carolina 8 inches of snow. 9 inches already reported in virginia and you can see other parts of north carolina like in charlotte 5.5 inches of snow. we have snow in parts of northern georgia and the atlanta area all of the way up to the new york city area. this is a widespread storm system. that storm coming down heavy as well across parts of maryland and northern virginia we are seeing snowfall rates there as well at 1-2 inches per hour. the radar along the coast including philadelphia,

including new york city up through boston because the storm system is tracking so close to the coast we are going to be seeing a bit of a mix. we are going to see a transition from snow over to sleet, even to freezing rain and eventually plain rain and then it will transition back to snow as the colder air wraps around in the backside of the system. take a look at 6:00 a.m. friday the snow coming down heavily across portions of new england. believe it or not this is saturday 3:00 p.m. there will be another quick moving clipper system clipping the northeast. not a lot of snow expected but another round of snow ice storm warnings in effect georgia, south carolina widespread winter storm warnings in effect and the winds another big issue. we could see gusts to 35 miles per hour. widespread 6-12 anywhere from virginia to parts of new england. >> covering the entire east coast it looks like. thank you, maria. >> hundreds of thousands of people waking up without power

down south. jonathan surrey continues our live could have raj from atlanta. jonathan, were you all prepared down there this time? >> much more prepared than the last storm two weeks ago. take a look at atlanta downtown connector ordinarily it would be crowded with rush hour traffic. very few vehicles on the road. most people heeding the warnings and staying at home. georgia managed to keep its roads clear for the most part. there were serious traffic problems in north carolina. many were stranded along the highways. power outages all through out the region. here in georgia we are told # 210,000 homes and businesses remain without electricity. ainsley, back to you. thank you, jonathan.

>> travelers going nowhere fast this morning thousands of flights are already canceled. doug luzader takes up our coverage there. they were telling people to strstay home before you make the trip to the airport. we heard one travel agent telling a group nothing is getting out of this airport until 10:00 a.m. and even that it is very optimistic. this is a story being repeated through out the region. that has a ripple effect on the rest of the country. for passengers this is tough because they don't know when their flights are going to go whether they can get rebooked and for them they have to be
